Cost-Effective Gardening Tips: Indoor Seeding Step-by-Step for a Thrilling Outdoor Garden Experience

When starting your own garden, there are a number of things you can do to save money, Starting your plants by indoor seeding not only saves you money, but also gives you great pleasure as you watch your seedlings develop. These steps will take you to a young thriving seedling filled garden.

  • You can find everything you need in a flower seed catalog.

If you want to find a wide selection of plants, find a typical variety, the best place to look would be an on or off-line (flower) seed catalog. No matter what type of plant you are looking for, or where you live, you will be able to find the right vegetable and flower seeds to suit you requirements.

Shade or sun, annuals or perennials, there is something for you! In addition, as an added advantage, flipping or clicking through such a catalog is fun and will give many new ideas to try out. Additionally, if you want hybrids or one-of-a-kind species, you will often only find them in a seed catalog. These catalogs are bursting with all types of captivating garden plants and provide gardeners with the opportunity to experiment and create a garden that is like no other!

  • The next step is planting.

The best time to plant your new seed is during the winter; around 6-8 weeks before you expect the last frost. Of course, this will vary depending on where you live. If you are unsure about starting and taking care of your garden, you can always check with your local gardening center.

To get started, here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Buy a packet of vegetable or flower seeds (this will cost about the same as buying a few retail plants). If planted too late, they will not be strong enough to transplant when you are ready to move them outdoors.
  2. Seedlings require A LOT of light. Natural sunlight is the most preferred method, but during the winter, this can be hard to achieve.
  3. As an alternative, you can grow your seedlings under artificial light, and give them as much sunlight whenever it is possible.A minimum of fourteen hours of light each day is required.
  4. If you have placed your plants near a window, and you find they are leaning, you will need to turn them around.

Seedlings are much like babies; they require special care.

  1. Seedlings are extremely prone to fungus and molds. This can be prevented by allowing for good drainage, and avoid over-watering.
  2. Try to use sterile potting soil for your plants. This helps boost their immune system, and helps fight off spores and pathogens.
  3. Make sure the potting mixture is not too wet.
  4. Use a water-soluble fertilizer on your plants after the first set of leaves develop.

Within a few weeks, you will witness the birth of new seedlings as they emerge from the soil! Now you give them the chance to grow and prepare to get them transplanted to their more permanent locations. A Seed Catalog are perfect to get new ideas, get your garden started early and are a fun way to get a lot of expertise about the plants you have in your garden.
