Most people think that vegetables need a lot of sunlight to grow. There are vegetables that grow even without full sunlight. There is a basic thumb rule to follow. If you are growing a plant that bears fruits and vegetables, then it needs full sunlight to grow. However, if you are growing plants for its leaves, then it will grow even without the sun. But, it should not be complete dense shade. There should be partial sunlight if not direct sunlight. For example, a spot under the tree will be just fine where partial sunlight reaches it. So, it basically means that spot is getting about three to six hours of sunlight and that is about all. Some of the plants that grow in this type of circumstances are beets, salad greens, cauliflower, broccoli, green peas, and green leafy vegetables like spinach, radish, carrot, sprouts and beans. The best thing about such vegetables is that you can ensure that they will grow healthily. However, remember that if you are growing vegetables in a shady spot, then make sure that the soil is rich and fertilized. Add organic fertilizer as much as possible because vegetables prosper in such growing environments. Also, draw boundaries for the garden and make sure that you stick to it. Add mulch and fertilizer after the plants grow. Before planting the seeds, use an inorganic or chemical fertilizer just to ensure the good health of the soil. You can take the benefit of fresh green vegetables even when you have a shaded vegetable garden.
